HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL HERITAGE OF THE PEOPLES OF VOLGA AND URAL REGIONS IN THE COLLECTION OF THE RUSSIAN ETHNOGRAPHIC MUSEUM
(ACQUISITION HISTORY)
The Russian Ethnographic Museum (REM) is the owner of a unique heritage of folk culture. As a result of many years of expedition and gathering work in the REM, a diverse collection of ethnographic objects and photographic materials has been formed that characterize various aspects of the traditional culture of the people of the Volga Ural region: Komi-Zyryan, Komi-Permyakov, Udmurt, Besermy, Mordovians, Mari, Chuvash, Bashkir, Tatar. Ethnographic collections of the Finno-Ugric and Turkic peoples of the Volga region and the Ural region are the largest in the Russian Federation. In total, there are about 25 thousand items, most of which belong to the period from the second
half of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century. The foundations of the collection of the Volga and Priurals department were laid in 1902-1914, thanks to the expedition and collecting activity of both the museum staff and its correspondents. Work on completing the department funds continues to this day. The exhibits, collected for more than 100 years, are a unique source study base for researchers, and also have great relevance in the exhibition, methodological, educational activities of the Russian Ethnographic Museum.
