2020 Resurgence / New Wave Trollface Memes

In 2020, Trollface experienced online resurgence in ironic memes, much like the resurgence of Doge memes in 2017 and 2018. The resurgence was triggered by ironic popularity of Cover Yourself in Oil format which hailed from an original Troll Science comic posted by 9GAG user Gegirik on February 13th, 2020 (shown below).

Cover Yourself in Oil

Cover Yourself in Oil refers to a Troll Science meme in which a person covers themselves in oil and manages to fly in the rain due to oil being less dense than water. Originating from a 2020 9GAG post, it was interpreted by many as a repost of an older meme and was later reimagined in ironic memes.

Trollge

Trollge refers to a unsmiling Trollface partially obscured with shadow. The Trollface gained its name and popularity from to a series of creepypasta-styled countdown videos that warn the viewer about the upcoming arrival of an entity named «Trollge» and advice to seek shelter. The videos were posted in /r/196 and /r/okbuddyretard subreddits in mid-November 2020 and received further spread online through reposts.

Schizoposting

Schizoposting refers to a large subset of memes that exploit the topic of schizophrenia and mental instability. A notable subformat makes use of Trollface and rage comics to create short narratives about schizophrenia, insanity and conspiracy theories.

The earliest sighting of the rage comic meme was under the name of «Coolface» instead of «Trollface» in January 2007. The Trollface was originally drawn by Tyler_mon, an Oakland-based artist known by his DeviantArt handle Wynne, as part of a MS Paint webcomic about the pointless nature of trolling on a video game forum. The comic was uploaded to DeviantArt on September 19th, 2008. Before the meme was made, there was a sketch of a disturbing smiled character that looked very similar mighty mouse named Rape Rodent who made an emotion the same way as what trollface has done. even though the meme of the Rape rodent was also created by Carlos Ramirez before he was posted online and after the trollface gained and succeeded a lot of popularity after him, then DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) has gave them a copyright complaint about the Meme Run game before it was banned about him making the idea of possibly Rape rodent after trollface. the copyright thought that he made the meme after the trollface but remade a sketch of the Rape Rodent before his meme of the trollface was succeeded. soon after the meme became very popular, rage comics has been making many comics with the meme in it, and since then, it has been appearing in numerous popular YouTube videos and even on memegenerator.com as well.

Description

The TrollFace is an insanely popular 2008 rage comic-based meme and is used a lot in rage comics. It mainly tells when someone is about to do something bad/mischievous, or other things. It is deemed as mischievous and is used when a character is about to do or is doing something bad, defying logic, or using logic to corner someone in an argument.

The troll face is very popular among gamers and is very commonly used in videos of the game, Minecraft. There is also troll song based on the troll face, it may also appear or make cameos in games that use the now defunct Adobe Flash Player plugin that has been discontinued on January 1st, 2021, on modern web browsers.

The Troll Face meme is also used in almost every derp video, or anything related. This rage face is arguably the most popular Rage Face, tied with Me Gusta.

Also, as the name implies it may commonly be used to troll people even though it is old.
By the way, this meme is still extremely popular to this day, but there is an alternate creepier version of him, commonly known as Trollge.

In the following months, Ramirez’ drawing quick gained traction on 4chan as the universal emoticon of an Internet troll and a versatile rage comic character. For a brief time, the face became alternatively known as «the coolface» after a rage comic-style webcomic took off on 4chan and Ebaumsworld, though only for a brief period of time.

Throughout the first half of 2009, Trollface quickly gained favor with Redditors and rage comic artists in particular, in part owing to the rapid growth of the /r/f7u12 subreddit around that same time. On August 1st, 2009, the first Urban Dictionary definition for «trollface» was submitted by user A Terrible Driver. Thousands of additional webcomic and photoshopped instances featuring the face can be found Tumblr, Cheezburger, Reddit, , Quickmeme and Memegenerator among many others.

Copyright Infringement Dispute

The background image for the f7u12 pages was changed to a picture of trollface with the text «HEY WHYNNE… U MAD BRO?»:

On March 3rd, 2015, Meme Run, an endless-running 2D platformer video game featuring a plethora of internet meme references, including the Trollface, was removed from the Wii U eShop following the issuance of a Digital Millennium Copyright Act takedown notice from Ramirez as the copyright holder of the character (shown below).

Profitability of Trollface

On April 8th, 2015, Kotaku ran an in-depth interview article with Ramirez about his now-iconic rage comic character. In the article, the Trollface artist estimated that he has earned more than $100,000 in licensing fees, settlements and other payouts since registering with the U.S. Copyright Office in 2010, with monthly revenues reaching as high as $15,000 at its peak in popularity. In addition, Ramirez also offered a backstory behind the removal of Meme Run from Wii U eShop, quoted as saying:

• There is a Minecraft Skin called the Troll and is a Very Popular skin amongst Minecraft Fans and is popular on YouTube videos and is popular on there as well. For one thing, in most of the Videos including the Troll skin in Minecraft, the skin that had the Face of the meme appeared in Most ExplodingTNT Videos on YouTube as a bully in his trolling videos
